Mr. Kasuri made the comments Tuesday at the St. Catharines Chamber of Commerce Breakfast, a gathering of about 70 builders, realtors, developers and their clients.

While Mr. Kasuri didn’t state that he believed the person behind the Ontario Construction Association (OCA) should be exempt from paying current taxes, he did say that it would be “outrageous” that the person or company is being criminally prosecuted.

“I just think it’s outrageous that a person can be criminally prosecuted for failure to pay up-to-date municipal tax and property tax,” he said.

Mr. Kasuri, who is also a builder, said that the number of developers and builders in the area is quickly growing. He said that Ontario currently has 3.5 million square feet of residential and commercial space under construction and more than 50,000 construction jobs.

“Ontario is the fastest growing real estate market in the world,” he added.

Ontario’s recent housing bubble, coupled with the province’s Housing Benefit program, drove a steady demand for real estate, as more people were buying houses and second homes in the province.

“We’re going to see that bubble build up and, right now, I believe it is in a relatively controlled fashion,” Mr. Kasuri said.

He also said that he thinks that the province’s Plan for Growth — and associated 15-Year Economic Plan — announced in June, will ensure a modest economic growth rate of 2.5 per cent per year.

“You’re going to see that continued over the next 15 years, and I think we should be worried about it going up,” he added.

“The good news is it’s going to happen in a fairly controlled fashion.”

He also said that, according to the 2015 Construction Spend Index Report from The Conference Board of
