The aim of the study was to evaluate changing trends in in-hospital mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction in western Sweden. Data from the Western Swedish Hospital Discharge Register (WSHDR) from 1978 to 1991 were linked to the WSHDR from the Swedish National Register of Total Population and the Swedish Cause of Death Registry. Cases of acute myocardial infarction were identified and subdivided into two groups, based on the time period during which the acute myocardial infarction occurred.
